Choosing a cat – advice from our Cat Boarding Near Me Experts

There is no denying the excitement of welcoming a new cat to your family, whether it is a kitten or a mature rescue. Here at the Cat hotel we meet many a cat boarding from both rescue situations and straight kitten adoptions. Choosing a companion for the next 10 to 15 years ia a daunting prospect so it’s worth taking the time to consider all the options carefully before making your decision. Think about where you live and how much time you have to spend with a young active kitten vs a mature cat. The size and shape of a grown cat is usually a good starting point to decide which kind.

Grooming and Allergies

Long haired cats do need brushing by you regularly. If you or someone in your family has allergies then regular bathing will also be necessary or maybe a breed with slightly more hypo-allergenic qualities.

Personality

Personality is also an important factor. Whilst you can’t 100% guarantee personality with the different breed types! they are certainly predisposed to different characteristics by genetics. Bengals and male ginger tabby’s are notoriously sweet and full of character. Devon and Cornish Rex’s are also incredibly affectionate. Maine Coones, Toygers and Bengals are often referred to being “dog like” in their behaviour. Whilst the breed may be an indication. All four of my cats, 3 who live predominantly at my house and Reggie who is exclusively at the Pet Hotel, are all very dog like. None of them are the breeds mentioned. In fact their are all domestic short or long haired cats of varying colours. My “black cat” Bradley, defies the stereo type and is exceptionally friendly and sociable. But it must be admitted, he is less so when compared to his siblings.

Male vs female

Male vs female is also a factor. Many are fearful of males because of the Spector of “spraying”. Neutering before their hormones start promoting this behaviour can halt a nasty habit before it even starts. Having a male doesn’t mean he will definately spray, although an unneutered male is very likely too. At the cat hotel we need to charge extra for unneutered male guests when cat boarding. This is because they are guaranteed to spray (mark) when other cats are obviously present.

Purebred vs Domestic mixed

The advantage to purebred is a greater guarantee of a certain look and possibly character type. Researching and Choosing a good breeder can reduce any worries of health problems associated with “over-breeding”. On the other hand, if you are in the position to rescue a cat needing a home, then their is nothing more rewarding than knowing you allowed a cat a life they may have otherwise been denied.

Mature vs Kitten

Time for play, possible cost of Spey/neutering and length of life comittment are the main issues to consider with a kitten. Little razor sharp teeth are a part of playing, as is the occasional bit of destruction (slight chewing and definate toppling of objects). Litter training is rarely an issue as most cats will leave the mother already with the instincts for litter training. If issues develop or exist when adopting a mature cat, consult with your Vet or call the cat hotel for advice. There are possible external or medical reasons that could cause this.

Considering adopting a Mature or Senior Cat

We have many a senior cat boarding at the hotel on any given day. There are many cats out there who’s parents have passed before them. Please consider providing a loving home for these undemanding loving cats who are already in mourning for their lost people, the insult of living their final years Ina shelter or heaven forbid being euthanized because of a lack of a home is too much to bear. Contact your local shelter, rescue or talk to our caregivers at our cat boarding near me if you are in a position to adopt a senior cat.

The biggest thing to remember about your future cat family member is that whilst they are more Independant than a dog, that doesn’t mean they don’t want attention as part of a loving family. However large or small your family is, your cat is the product of millenniums of breeding and existence as part of a pride. Without other cats, you are their pride. They are territorial and will spend time pseudo- hunting and patrolling thier territory, but at some point and time in the day, they wish to be part of mutual grooming and companionship. The physical and mental rewards of cat parenting are immense, share your life with a fabulous feline.

For advice on different cat types, adoption and rescues please feel free to visit our 5 star cat hotel and chat with our dedicated and expert care team.

Good luck finding your new family member.
